How to dispose of Fire Extinguishers

Posted on August 22, 2024 at 9:37 AM by Kaitlynn McCumiskey

Fire ExtinguisherThis month we are covering hard to recycle items. Continuing that conversation, this week we’ll take a look at fire extinguishers devices.

A fire extinguisher should never be disposed of in the garbage or placed in a recycling bin. Even if you think there is no pressure left there is still a danger that it could explode.

Most fire extinguishers have a pressure gauge that should be checked regularly to ensure that it will function when you need it. Most fire extinguishers only last 5 to 10 years, even if they have never been used. You should never test your fire extinguisher. If you spray your fire extinguisher even once, you must replace it or have it refilled.

There are a few options for disposal of your fire extinguisher once it has reached the end of its life:

  1. Check with local Fire Departments. Many of them will take fire extinguishers for training and then proper disposal.
  2. Residents can recycle fire extinguishers, free of charge, at Monroe Extinguisher - 105 Dodge St., Rochester 14606 (585-235-3310)

Some fire extinguishers can be refilled or recharged. If your extinguisher is labeled as such, reach out to Monroe Extinguisher for more information about that service.
