1. Should I leave the caps on plastic drink bottles and containers when I recycle them?

Yes.

2. Do I need to wash recyclable items before I put them in my recycle bin?

They should be reasonably clean. Be considerate of the workers who handle your recyclables at the Recycling Center.

3. Does everything I put in my recycle bin get recycled?

Everything you put in your bin is sorted. For details on how this process works, check out this short video. Make sure you only put materials in your bin that are listed as acceptable to ensure that everything you’ve sorted gets recycled. Any material you put in the bin that’s not on the list has to be sorted out and disposed of separately.

4. Can I recycle pizza boxes?

Yes, as long as they’re fairly clean (not too much stuck-on cheese, etc.).

5. Can I put plastic shopping bags and packaging bags in my recycle bin?

No, plastic bags get caught in the sorting equipment and damage it. In many cases, you can save them and bring them back to the store they came from.

6. Can I throw paint in the garbage?

Yes, if it’s latex-based and completely dried, you can throw it in the garbage. To dispose of oil-based paints, hang on to them until our next Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event.
