Rechargeable Battery Recycling

Posted on February 9, 2023 at 8:45 AM by Kaitlynn McCumiskey

What to do with batteries imageYou may be wondering, if rechargeable batteries don’t belong in the recycling bin, and they don’t belong in the trash…what do you do with them?

Visit OntarioCountyRecycles.org to:

1.            Find out when the next local Household Hazardous Waste Collection event is

2.            Find a mail-in program for batteries

3.            Discover a retailer or other drop-off location near you with a take back program

It’s worth putting in the energy when it comes to rechargeable batteries at the end of life. Properly disposing of hazardous materials like rechargeable batteries, not only protects recycling employees but can also help the surrounding environment. Rechargeable batteries contain toxic heavy metals that can contaminate the water and soil, potentially harming fish and wildlife species. In NYS, it’s illegal to dispose of rechargeable batteries in the trash and no batteries belong in your household recycling bin.

For additional assistance contact the NYS DEC Product Stewardship & Waste Reduction Section at pswr@dec.ny.gov or call (518) 402-8706.
