Happy Earth Day! Did you know that Ontario County took a progressive approach to materials management even before Earth Day and the EPA existed? In 1969, Chairman Rowley, then Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, proposed retaining outside consultants to assess the need for a solid waste program and created a solid waste disposal planning agency.
Fast forward to today, the Department of Sustainability and Solid Waste Management focuses on the County’s efforts to increase sustainable practices and waste diversion by employees, residents, businesses, and institutions. The Department oversees the implementation of Ontario County’s Local Solid Waste Management Plan that sets both quantitative and qualitative goals, while taking a comprehensive look at materials management. The Department also has a strategic plan that identifies a vision, mission, and four key focus areas, which include: Equal & Adequate Access, Funding to Advance Department Goals, Legislation and Policies Aligned with County’s Plans for Solid Waste Management, and Customized Education & Communications.
