Every Sip Counts

Ontario County Department of Sustainability and Solid Waste Management is dedicated to reducing single use plastic waste throughout our county. The Department has developed the “Every Sip Counts” campaign that partners with businesses to encourage an opt in policy that requires a customer to request a straw instead of being provided one automatically. The campaign is an optional program, not a ban. The Department believes that business owners and customers value practices that reduce waste.

We're working together to cut plastic waste.

Over 50% of all the plastic ever made has been produced since 2004. Are you feeling overwhelmed by the scale of the plastic problem? Giving up plastic straws is a small step to get started.

At a straw-optional facility, your customers request a straw instead of being given one with their drink by default. This one small change greatly reduces straw waste by a significant amount. Not only does it have a positive impact on our region's environmental health it can also reduce your operating costs.

For those customers that request a straw, you can still provide them one, and for those that don't, it's a strong statement of support for the long-term sustainability of our region's environment.

The Department of Sustainability has developed materials to help implement this policy and promote it to your customers at no cost to you. These include door/window decals, table tents with facts and information, and pins for servers.
